4 more charged in 2009 prison riot
WINNIPEG - Four more men have been charged for their alleged involvement in a riot at a Manitoba jail last year, bringing to 10 the number of people facing charges so far.
The Winnipeg Police Service arrested four suspects Feb. 26, assisting the Brandon Police Service, which is conducting the investigation into the uprising at Brandon Correctional Centre.
The men arrested by Winnipeg police had been transferred to a different facility or released from jail since the riot last October.
Two were arrested at residences in Winnipeg and two were arrested at the Winnipeg Remand Centre, where they were already in custody, police said.
Faron Ross, 31, Victor Alexander Ryle, 26, and Charles Dominic Comeau, 26, are charged with participating in a riot and mischief under $5,000. Rene Cameron, 22, is charged with participating in a riot, failing to disperse and escaping lawful custody.
All four men are now in custody. The investigation continues and further arrests are pending, police said.
Up to 27 inmates were allegedly involved in the riot, which the jail guards’ union blamed on overcrowding conditions.
Those allegedly involved are members of the same gang, officials said previously.
The revolt began when the inmates refused to lock up for a routine inmate count.
The inmates trashed the unit and broke through an exterior wall.
Officials said the riot came to an end when the corrections emergency response unit entered and used pepper spray to apprehend the inmates.
